We can't do what we do at Discovery without our incredible volunteers. But our volunteers say that serving has also made a difference in their lives and their relationship with God. Check out their stories and share your volunteer story as well.
Joy and fulfillment are the words to describe our experience in co-leading our community group with Dan and Pam Preece. Our joy is muti-faceted: making new friends whom we see every week, experiencing their support during Ruth’s hospital stays through prayer, phone calls, visits and offers of food, sharing in prayer for one another weekly and seeing God answer our prayers. In addition to these ways, we supported one of our members through the death of her husband with many of us coming to the Celebration of Life service for our dear friend. The fulfillment comes in facilitating some of our meetings (sharing with our co-leaders), seeing our group members share their ideas around scripture and grow in their knowledge and obedience to God’s Word, and experiencing the wonderful support of Pastors Scott and Neimad as they shared regular tips by email and encouraged us through the rich input of periodic leader huddles. We heartily encourage you to experience the joy and fulfillment of leading a community group!
Getting to know the kids and caring for them. Or even catching yourself praying for them. I feel in a way it changed me for who I was to who I am. (For the better)
Having the opportunity to serve in DSM has been such a blast! The relationships I have built with my girls mean a lot to me and it is so humbling to know that I am someone they trust and respect. Not only has it been great to watch students grow in their relationships with God, but my time with them has challenged me and helped me to grow as well.
Serving in 252 Street has drawn me closer to God. After teaching, I leave feeling as though I'm the one who learned the most. I've developed amazing relationships with kids and parents that originally did not exist.
Working as a volunteer at Discovery Church has brought me closer to God. I am learning new things and making friends with new beautiful people. Being there on Sunday makes me feel whole. I feel like my purpose in life is being met. Best of all is all the love you can get and receive.
Serving at Discovery Church on Sunday mornings with my daughters has been a blessing. It has allowed me to see the gifts of my girls through their teaching of the Lord's love. They're owning their faith by starting their Sunday with loving God and loving God's little children. Daisy and Sabrina have been serving with me as a mom in 252 Street for 2yrs and prior to that, they were serving in Discoveyland for 4yrs.
Volunteering in DSM is a huge part of my life. Seeing the young guys grow up has allowed me to speak into their lives. Volunteering has been a blessing and has helped me further my own relationship with Christ.
I love that we all get to serve as a family (Ernie, Kayla and myself...Mark is still too young. Lol). Sometimes together, sometimes in different ministries, but serving nonetheless. I love that we get to share about Christ. Just the other day, I challenged my small group kids to read the book of Mark to get more insight about the life of Jesus. The next week one of my small group kids, pulled me aside and said, "I started reading the book of Mark like you suggested...." We were able to talk more about it and what she learned. And that's what fills my heart! I know Kayla loves serving too. If it were up to her we would be there every Sunday for 3 services. Lol
It has helped teach me how to talk more about God with my own children, at their level. It has brought us closer to more families at church. Some parents of our classes are now great family friends. We've met and utilize some great babysitters! We have more knowledge about what is being taught to our children so we can talk about it through the week, not just on Sunday,(Parent Cue is also a great tool) and it has helped with our own verse knowledge. Our oldest loves serving with us on occasion and looks forward to serving in Discoveryland and DKLive some day!
Makes me feel blessed and small - these little ones are on loan to us from a very big God that wants to feel close to us.
There are few relationships that I can recall that are as "joyful" as our small group. Since our children were young, I recall an excitement associated with "small group night". It is a time when we join people who quickly become pure friends. We love our Bible learning and share our perspectives. Our group truly shares our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. and receive acceptance and approval. We also enjoy greeting on Sundays, where we have met and loved so many people, and it is mutual. We also like hugs, pats on the back, and handshakes. I especially enjoy the fist bumps from the kids, especially the little ones and the shy ones. God gives back more than we do.
I love serving and know God has placed me where He needs me. I serve in registration in both environments and I get something different out of both. I enjoy greeting each child and parent when they come in. Helping brainstorm with a grandmother who is trying to get her daughter and grandkids to church. Serving along side people who have become my friends and who know I will pray for them and vice versa. Who celebrate the joys with me as well. Having my kids serve with me in both environments and enjoy it just as much as I do, is a blessing!!
Serving in DSM (Discovery Student Ministries) has helped me stay young at heart. I learn from the students more than they know and it is awesome. I'm so glad I can pour back into a place that helped raise me!
